Having to re-lace the cantle along with the pommel on an English saddle is one of the three most common repairs. English saddles have two styles of panels: flocked panels and foam/felt panels. Each style has its own method of attaching the panel to the tree at the cantle.
FLOCKED PANEL
The cantle on an English saddle with a flocked panel is laced to the saddle where the rear of the flap is attached to the tree ( point A ) around to the corresponding spot on the other side ( point B ). One must first remove the old thread to re-lace the cantle. When removing the old thread take care to observe how the cantle is laced, as each maker will lace the cantle in their own way and you will need to re-lace the cantle in the same way. Some saddler’s will start on the off side, while others will start on the on or nearside and once and a while a saddler will start on each side and meet in the middle.
